Alaska Songbird Institute’s Virtual Field Trip to Creamer’s Field

Educators and parents can find ASI’s new virtual field trip to Creamer’s Field and our bird banding station by following the link above. You can use this direct link for your students: https://arcg.is/CPCaC

** Please note that some individuals using Safari have been routed to a log in page. You do not need a login to access the field trip. Try using Chrome or Mozilla for the time being. We are working on it–Safari users–stay tuned!

It will take most students about 20 minutes to complete the virtual field trip. It contains the same basic content as our traditional, in-person field trips including:

  • bird taxonomy and adaptations
  • the boreal forest ecosystem and its connection to birds
  • the basics of scientific research
  • migration
  • Alaska bird conservation
  • the historic conservation story of Creamer’s Field

These broad topics provide many jumping off points to grade level curriculum!

You can also download some Extension Ideas and Scavenger Hunt (with answer key!) These are provided as word docs for easy adaptation. Best of luck, and let us know how it goes!

This is a brand new endeavor for us, and we would love your feedback! This quick online survey is just a couple of questions and should take just 3 minutes! If you leave your contact info at the end we will enter you into a drawing to win a live stream with our bird banders at the Creamer’s Field Migration Station for your classroom or learning group!

Special thanks to Mark Ross and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, our long standing partners in K-12 education on the refuge!

Thanks to Ruth Knapman and Barbara Logan for photos.

This work is made possible by the generous support of ConocoPhillips Alaska, TOTE Maritime, the Golden Heart Community Foundation, the City of Fairbanks Hotel-Motel Discretionary Fund, and ASI’s amazing community of supporters.
