Alaska Songbird Institute

Volunteer

ASI is a community-based organization, and our volunteers make it all happen. Volunteers help us in many ways–“picking” birds from mist nets, conducting data entry, helping plan events, serving on an advisory committee, etc.. We have opportunities for people of all ages and skill sets. Download our general volunteer application below for a complete list of volunteer opportunities. Thank you for your interest!

Interested in volunteering at CFMS?

The Creamer’s Field Migration Station (CFMS) could not operate without a crew of dedicated volunteers. Thank you to all who have participated over the years. Volunteers at CFMS learn to open and close mist nets, extract birds from nets, record data, and help with general upkeep of the station. It is a great way to learn more about interior Alaska’s songbirds and to meet other people interested in birds and conservation. No experience is necessary; training is provided.

Generally, CFMS volunteer opportunities are available during our spring and fall banding periods: weekday mornings from late April – early June, and 5-7 mornings/week late July – late September. However, there can be opportunities to contribute to CFMS outside our standard banding operations.

First-Time Volunteers:

Please read the CFMS volunteer job description. It contains general information, expectations, and a map. After reviewing this information, please complete a volunteer application and contact ASI. You must contact ASI before signing up for your first shift. For inquiries about our volunteer program at CFMS, please contact Robert Snowden at ASI.science@aksongbird.org.

Returning Volunteers:

Please sign up for shifts using the current season’s volunteer calendar when it becomes available before the spring and fall banding seasons, respectively. If you cannot access this calendar, please contact Robert. Remember to be cautious with the calendar! If you click on a cell and start typing, you will erase any others that have signed up in that cell.
