Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Description

At the Seasonal Pond at Creamer’s Field, keep your eyes peeled for Horned Grebes. During the breeding season, you can spot these small waterbirds in wetland habitats throughout Alaska and western Canada. They dive for their foodtypically a healthy mix of insects, fish, and crustaceans.

Breeding adults, such as the bird pictured here at Creamer’s Field, have a reddish-brown neck, breast, and sides. Their back and head is black. They have a tan-colored tuft running from their beak to the back of their head. Their eyes are red, and their pointed, narrow beaks are black. Nonbreeding adults have white cheeks, throats, and sides. They are missing the tan “horns” that give them their name.
