Canada Goose

Branta canadensis

Description

Conspicuous for their “honking” calls, wide distribution, and large size, Canada Geese are well known to anyone with a backyard. You can find Canada Geese in any type of freshwater wetland habitat, wild or heavily populated.

Canada Geese are brown on top and cream-colored underneath. They have slender black necks. Their heads are black except for a bright white “chin strap.” Their beaks are also black. They have thick black legs and webbed feet suited to their semi-aquatic lifestyle. There are many different subspecies of the Canada Goose. They appear similar to each other, only differing in size and darkness of plumage.
