North for Science!

North for Science! is a week-long field expedition for students currently enrolled in 7th or 8th grade. It is offered collaboratively by ASI, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service. Departing from Fairbanks, we travel north up the Dalton Highway. Over the course of the week, students are immersed in an outdoor experience as we traverse lands adjacent to Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, as well as Yukon Flats, Kanuti, and Arctic National Wildlife Refuges. The activities are designed to teach participants basic camping skills and engage in multiple aspects of field science/research.

Thanks to our sponsors and collaborators, North for Science! is operated at no cost to the participating students. However, the program does not cover the cost of travel to and from Fairbanks, local accommodations, or other expenses incurred by out-of-town participants before or after the program dates.

Requirements

We welcome all students with interest in biological, ecological, and physical sciences. N4S is an excellent opportunity to explore these interests further and to learn more about career paths in STEM fields. North for Science! is an active science education program. The group works hard and plays hard, living outdoors and getting dirty in all kinds of weather and bug conditions. Participants need to be energetic, flexible team members who will enthusiastically participate in all activities along the way.

We are now accepting applications for the North for Science! 2026 expedition. Students please use the first link below to complete an application form, and give the teacher/mentor link to those who will provide references for you. The application deadline is Saturday, April 11th 2026. This year’s expedition is scheduled for June 7-14, 2026 (dates subject to change).
