Our mission is to conserve Alaska’s boreal birds through ecological education and research.

We are based at Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks, in the heart Alaska’s boreal forest. Creamer’s Field was once the northernmost dairy in Alaska, and is now a state refuge managed for migratory birds. At ASI maintains a small office in the Creamer’s Field Farmhouse and our core, long-term projects work occur on the refuge’s 2,000+ acres.

Diverse science education programming is both integral and essential to our research. At ASI, data are collected by students from preschool to graduate school, teachers, tourists, seniors, and everyone in between. Our suite of programming includes introductory field trips and guided bird walks where participants visit our field projects, interact with scientists, and see songbirds up close. For those who seek more in-depth learning, we also offer youth mentoring, high school internships, volunteer opportunities, college and early career internships, and bird banding apprenticeships.
